Keyword Lists for Lawyers

Keyword research is one of those topics that has become too confusing with too many shiny objects. Before we talk about keyword research, let’s understand that this is a process of marketing research.

Marketing Research

Marketing research is merely the process of gathering analyzing and understanding information about a particular market. In its simplest form, marketing research can be understood by two unique processes. Primary marketing research and secondary marketing research.

Primary marketing research is essentially gathering the information yourself, and secondary market research is relying on that information that others have already gathered.

In a perfect world, primary marketing research is getting you to the best data for your company however in many instances this is not feasible therefore we rely on secondary research.

I feel in the discussion of keyword research far too often to business owners and Internet marketers rely solely on secondary research. I’ve always said the best keyword research is with the clipboard and walking through your local mall.

Buying Cycle

The buying cycle is the process that every customer client goes through when they decide to purchase a product or service. It is very important that you offer lies your website for the stages of your client buy cycle.

It is said law firms and their clients go through four unique stages while making a purchase of attorney services. (SOURCE: Disruptive Advertising). Those are:

Awareness

Research

Comparison & Purchase

Retention & Referrals

The two stages that are most important for us and the phase of keyword research is stage two and stage three.

Research Stage of the Buying Cycle

After a client has recognized that they have a problem, such as a DUI or upcoming divorce, prospects have now become aware that they may need help and they begin to research.

The first thing we have to think about here is the feeling of the prospect. How do they feel? Are they scared? Are they looking for answers to what might happen to them? Are they looking for a peace of mind with the timeline of their situation?

The bottom line is this they have a problem and there was a negative feeling associated with that problem. It is your job as the attorney to rid them of that feeling and provide a sense of relief.

During the research phase, your prospective client is going to be researching keywords and key phrases that are related to getting an understanding of their situation.

These searches on Google are typically what we call long-tail keyword searches and are in the form of a question.

ACTIVITY TIP

Think of all the questions your prospects have asked you in the past. Group those questions into groups labeled as your services…such as DUI questions, or divorce.

Now prioritize these questions. You should easily be able to come up with at least a dozen per service.

With your three, four or maybe five lists of a dozen questions for each of your services, in order of priority (for frequency asked), this list is going to be very helpful later in your keyword research stage, plus serve as a content creation schedule, we’ll discuss later.

Comparison & Purchase Stage of the Buying Cycle

Your prospect has now decided they need to hire an attorney. In many cases, prospective clients will go through the research stage mentioned earlier, however, in some cases they’ll already know they need an attorney and will proceed to find an attorney.

Of course, if you’ve served the client in the past and did great work, you’ll be on their radar. However, if personal experience and recommendations fail, almost everyone and anyone will jump to google.

Buying keywords are your #1 keywords you want to rank for. I consider a buying keyword to have one, two or all three of the following components.

Core Term

Modifier

Geomod (Geographical modifier)

The Core Term is your service.

The Modifier is your practice.

The Geomod is your location.

In many cases, Google determines or overrides the geomod. Whether it’s GPS location, cellular triangulation, IP trace code or user input, Google tends to solve the problem of the geomod for its users.

You can also see that there are several subsets of the main core term. In this example, [car accident] or [nursing home abuse] are examples of two umbrella core terms.

There are really only three main modifiers, Lawyer, Attorney, and Law Firm. The term [attorney] is searched on average twice as many times as [lawyer] and four times as many times as [law firm].

ACTIVITY TIP

Open Microsoft Excel (of your favorite spreadsheet software) and start with a blank canvas.

In the first column, write down in order of your priority, all your Core Terms.

In the next column, put down your modifiers.

Finally, list your geomods. This will include your City, State, County, Zip Code and any potential abbreviated local terms describing the area…In some cases this is the airport (hence airport code).

Once you have your list in three columns, jump over to this handy Local Keyword Tool and combine the three columns into one single list.

You should have a list of 40 to 100 of your top keywords.

Tracking

Everything that is measured improves. Plain and simple.

There are several keyword tracking tools out there today, and it’s been a thorn in my side since I began with SEO.

There is not one single SEO tool out there that I love. Some I like, most I don’t.

As far as tracking keywords, many of the tools simply track the organic listings and not the local listings. Most tracking tools emulate a typical good search from a specific geographical location. Most only give a perspective from a single physical location.

Another way to measure keyword performance is to determine where a business ranks on Google for a variety of specific locations.

Unfortunately, there are no online ranking tools that do both. So a combination of some of the online ranking tools out there, along with Google Analytics and Google My Business Insights, you can get a good perspective of where you rank along with potential opportunities.

How Attorneys Get SEO Clients

I’ve been providing and teaching SEO since 2005, and frankly when I hear someone say ‘The SEO industry changes so much’ I get that chill down my spine…like, they just don’t get it.

You’ll see that we rank at the top for the keyword [Local SEO Case Study for Attorneys]

The case study is nice, but today I’m going to cover the implementation, not the strategy. So if you’re interested in a high level overview of the strategy, head over to learn about to marketing your law firm on the Internet using SEO.

You see, the SEO industry is really just…well bullshit. Everyone’s got an opinion and not is really regulating what’s being said. I’ve written a lot about my thoughts on this, but for now to get value from this piece, I’ll say this in proper SEO fashion, just believe me!!

Today is about the activities that provide the greatest SEO bang, along with the greatest value for your Law Practice.

7 Most Effective SEO Activities for Lawyers

Consistent High-Value Blog Content

Quality Effective Website

Video

Press Releases

Guest Posts

Profile Citations

Reviews

It’s really that simple, just not easy. You’ll hear so much in SEO about ‘content is king’, write blog posts that are 1000 words and 5% dense with your target keyword, have a website that scores 90 in Google, get data aggregators, citations, optimize your profiles….and on and on and on and on.

There are so many strategies and opinions it’s quite frustrating, gives me a headache more than that when I’m in a hockey locker room full of 13 year old boys going through puberty.

Listen to Google

It’s about Trust and Authority. Heck, look, I’m referencing the greatest authority source on the matter, Google. They are literally telling you exactly what you have to do to rank on their search engine. You have to be a trusted authority source on the matter. It’s that simple.

The hard part is actually proving to a search engine that your content is worthy to rank.

I tell my students a little secret in trying to understand is a particular ‘SEO strategy’ is worth it. Imagine yourself in a completely dark room, eyes closed, and ask yourself….if this strategy good for my clients? Is this strategy good for my business? Is this strategy good for my own values? If you answer YES to all three, then it’s probably a worthy strategy.

Imagine the question of link building…having link on a quantity of sites. Is this good for the client, being listed on a directory in Canada? Probably not.

What about a video that answers a DUI question for a Criminal Defense Attorney’s potential client? This would make great sense for the business, the attorney and the client.

The following list I’ll be talking about in a authoritative and trustworthy sense, I’ll be forgoing the nuances of the SEO world. I don’t want a headache today.

Blog Content

This one is definitely not the most insightful or unique tip you’ve ever heard. It’s also quite a boring discussion, so I’ll try and give you the nuts and bolts in a couple of breaths.

Your blog is your communication to your audience. So answer their questions!

If you’re a Personal Injury attorney interested in getting more car accident cases, think about the typical questions a prospective client asks you. Make a list of the dozen most asked questions.

Now create a blog post answering each question. Don’t outsource it. Don’t write a piece to achieve 1000 keywords. Write an essay like you were taught in school. Submit a piece that you’d be proud to give to your favorite professor.

Make you have your works cited (outbound links). Make sure you use visuals when you can (images). Make it readable (headlines / short paragraphs).

Your list of a dozen or so topics and this is your content creation schedule for the next year.

Website

OK, so every small business should have a website. You can spend build a free one, you can spend $25,000. You can make it flashy, have great features and impress your best collegues, but the bottom line is, if it doesn’t perform, it’s useless.

As far as SEO is concerned, there are perhaps a dozen or so important things to consider. Some will give you a list of 25, others say five or so factors are truly important.

We call these On The Page factors. Technically, your website should be error free, load relatively quick and be fairly up to date in the coding. So plan on getting a rebuild every three to five years.

Page loading speed is pretty important. We measure with two tools

Google Page Speed Test

Pingdom Speed Test

As long as your website is loading in less than 4 seconds and less than roughly 4mb, your going to be OK. However, you ideally want a website to load in 2 seconds.

As far as user experience, your website should be achieving a Call to Action, or CTA. Typically this is either a phone call to the business or a form filled out on the website.

Obviously there are many elements required to help optimize the CTA such as user navigation, user experience and technical elements such as CTR (click through rate) tracking.

A good website requires the skills of several areas.

Of course content is important, but you’ll see this entire piece is merely focused on quality content, which is housed and organized properly on your website, the users and the search engines.

Video

Let’s face it, video is the one digital medium that touches all three factors that influence human behavior…our words, our tone, and our physiology. While each has its own weight in its ability to influence, it is said our physiology represents 55% of our influence. This was first written about by Albert Mehrabian and his 7-38-55 rule.

We can only convey physiology with video

Video is usually very confusing and scary for some. It could cost a lot of money, it could require an investment in technology and skill. It brings the deer in headlight look when considering what to do with video.

Video is really not that hard, if you stick with the basics. You don’t need a highly edited, heavy b-roll scripted studio shot video to be effective.

A simple rule with video is good lighting and good audio. So let me give you a simple video strategy for your firm, this is exactly our strategy for our clients. It consists to two types of video.

Attorney Talking Head

Blog Talking Head

Sure, you can spend $15,000 on a solid commercial and have that as your headline video, but here I’m talking about creating videos on a regular basis. Remember, the search engines love consistent quality content.

You can choose both of these strategies or either one.

Attorney Talking Head

Hire someone or bring someone in to record you at your desk. Wear your typical daily clothing and psych yourself up to speaking with a prospect, not a camera.

Have your dozen questions written out that you put together for the blog exercise.

Make sure you have some good lighting on your face and eyes, with no shadows. Don’t use the camera mic, plug in a lavalier or use a good boom mic.

Have someone ask you the question and start talking. If you feel more comfortable, speak to a person in the room rather than at the camera. Just stay consistent.

Editing the video is easy, you’re shooting for 90 seconds to four minutes, ideally in the two minute range.

Post the videos regularly (not all at once) to YouTube. Embed the video on your blog. Propagate to your social channels.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n2FmGgsJQI

Blog Talking Head

We have a little studio that we create talking head videos for our clients. It’s simple, we take a popular blog post of theirs, create a script, read it and add b-roll. Check out this client video.

Videos like this will run your around $500 a piece. But look at it like this…a year’s worth of video is valued at $6k, and for that price you’ll have a complete library of content that is answering your client’s objections. These videos can be used for years to come, over and over…on your blog, on YouTube channel, social media and client presentations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZeJY50MfAVE

Press Releases

It would be nice to be able to put this image on your website and social channels, wouldn’t it?!

A press release when done properly will do this. We’ll do a press release at least quarterly for our clients and get distribution into at least 150 press publications. This PR piece below was submitted to 267 Full Page Placements on 267 different news sources. This included Google News, Fox, Associated Press, ABC, CBS and NBC!

There are many PR distribution services available, and many are simply useless. It’s tough the play the free game here. We spend significant time creating a quality piece that’ll be picked up and spend upwards of $1000 for effective distribution. The media game is a pay to play game.

Guest Posts

You’ve heard links are important in SEO. You’ve also probably heard a quality link is more important than quantity. But the question becomes, where do you get links from?

Vision this…a scientist publishes a paper and it’s picked up in a science journal. Another scientist doing research and uses the first piece as a reference. When the 2ndscientist moves up in the ranks, the trust given to the first scientist will increase. Guest Posts do the same and provide that value in the form of improved SEO…or links.

This is an article that we hired to have written for us by Sharon Rondeau. Her blog is a very busy blog with high authority on Google…in this case, her blog and this page receive a PR6 rating. So a link from her blog to any site passes high page rank value.

As you can see in this article, it’s a piece that written about a car accident situation and provides a link with the anchor text [personal injury attorney]. This link is directed to our client, and in this case, we’re trying to improve the keyword of their main core competency, a PI attorney.

You can become a guest writer on your association websites, your school, clients’ websites or publications you’ve been published in.

A firm such as ours spend a lot of time building relationships with high authoritative blog writers that can offer value to their audience with content relevant to our clients.

Profile Citations

These are simply directories. There are major one, niche directories, local directories and industry, major aggregators, the telco’s, the list goes on.

Our industry is split on opinions on who to hire, how to execute and whether to hire data pushers. I’ll tell you what we do.

You’ll need a consistent profile about your business. We take the time to create a properly optimized profile with description, image set and all relevant and pertinent information.

First we purchase the elite plan at YEXT for our clients. This costs us about $1000 a year. This is nice, in a nut shell, because it instantly covers a lot of the biggest directories such a Bing, Yelp and Yahoo. It’ll help with about 50 sites and ensure you have all four of the major data aggregators.

Over the first six months, we then proceed to manually claim and own the profiles that YEXT has created. YEXT is also nice for duplicate suppression.

Next, we begin the monthly ongoing process of acquiring about 30 new citations a month. We have a huge database of local and industry citation sources.

There are literally hundreds available. Some can take 30 minutes or more to properly acquire and claim. This is an ongoing process, indefinitely.

Reviews

Reviews are said to be the digital form of word-of-mouth, or WOM. WOM is definitely the best marketing strategy in history for attorneys, and this still holds true.

You need a firm-wide Review Strategy. Period. I believe it is imperative that you, as the attorney and business owner, to build a company philosophy towards the importance of receiving positive reviews on a consistent basis, for the life of your practice.

We call this finding your hero clients. You want to do what you can to ethically encourage your most satisfied clients to talk about you online. Whether it’s Google, or Facebook, you need a system to encourage, measure and monitor this activity.

Your goal should be to receive at least two new 5-star reviews per month, but one a week would be better. Obviously the volume of your firm will further dictate this activity, but regardless, you need consistent reviews.

We implement our RAP system, or our Review Acquisition Programfor Attorneys.

This is a system that helps build that company culture, provides the tools to encourage client reviews and helps measure and monitor progress.

If you’re an Attorney and are Not Ranking in the Top 3 Spots on Google, this is for you.

So you’ve made the decision to go at in on your own. Good for you.

Maybe you’ve worked in a firm for some years, are fresh out of school, or have had your practice for a few years and simply need to get more new clients.

Either way, you’re looking at an ocean of experts and advice. Really, no matter where you are with your firm’s history, today’s ways of finding new business can seem very daunting.

But let’s get something straight. Today’s ways aren’t much different, and client referrals are simply still the staple of any law firm.

Now when I say today’s ways aren’t much different, even in the world of SEO, PPC, Social Media, Video or blogging, they aren’t much different.

It still comes down to creating a message of value for your perspective audience. Period.

Creating Trust, Authority, Value & Perspective

This is the definition of marketing from the American Marketing Association.

“Marketing is the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large. (Approved July 2013)” [source: AMA]

This is basically saying to create a message that has value for clients and prospects, and put that message where those prospects are….oh, and make sure it’s a good message, one that has value for this audience.

SEO is just Marketing

The definition of Search Engine Optimization is different by the views of our industry, but here I’m going to show it’s the same.

“Search engine optimization is the process of increasing the quality and quantity of website traffic by increasing visibility of a website or a web page to users of a web search engine.” [source:Wikipedia]

Well by this definition, increasing the Quantity AND Quality of website traffic is the same as increasing the number of qualified leads for your firm. Therefore, by increasing where your business ranks in Google, in theory, you will increase the number of qualified leads for your practice.

The process to improve SEOis where these definitions cross, and in fact, are the same.

“Search Engine Optimization can be defined as the activity and process for creating, communicating, delivering and exchanging offerings that have value for clients, partners, prospects and the community at large. “ [source: Scott Gallagher]

In other words, create a message that has value for clients and prospects, and put that message where those prospects are….oh, and make sure it’s a good message, one that has value for this audience.

The SEO Industry is Ugly

Alright, enough high level discussion of SEO for Attorneys. I’m about to turn it up a notch.

The SEO industry is very defragmented, unregulated, saturated and highly misunderstood. Johny with an internet connection down the street can buy a course for $97 and call himself an expert. I know, my hobby business is selling a course on how to do this, for $97 a month.

I’ve approached the SEO industry with a marketing mindset since 2005….not a cat-and-mouse-reverse-engineers-the-algorithm-approach.

Search Engines Drive More New Leads to a Firm Than All Other Online Mediums Combined

So you have your referral system in place but now needs more new leads. You turn to the internet, and here you are.

Let’s face it, you can throw money at Pay Per Click. Or hire a young social media expert. Perhaps you want to get behind the camera. Maybe your web developers is trying to sell you SEO. Yelp is calling you selling you ads. Your association wants money for an email blast.

It’s confusing as f$%^!!!

But the fact remains the same, a search engine trumps all mediums.

Consider this. Whether you’re a Personal Injury Attorney or a Criminal Defense Lawyer, your clients go through a similar process in deciding you’re their best partner….and it’s unlike most other buying processes your client experiences.

No one wants to hire you!

Well, no one wants to deal with having to hire a lawyer, it’s almost always an uncomfortable situation your clients would rather not have.

But, your clients need you. And at some point, they realize they need you. It starts something like this.

Problem Arises

Problem is Researched

Awareness Arrives

Solution Devised

Execution

They get nailed in a car accident. They go home and research their pain and options they have. They learn they can sue and need a lawyer. The search for a lawyer. They hire a lawyer.

That’s it.

Now I’m About to Explain How this Applies to SEO

You need to be in front of the prospective client during step 2 and step 4. You need to help them during their research stage of their problem and their stage when they research which attorney to hire.

These are two different types of searches on the internet, and Google is going to handsomely reward you if you offer good help to these prospects and clients.

For example, if you’re an attorney in Chicago and someone like myself gets nailed from behind, I’m likely to first research my pain and how to address it.

But next I’ll want to know how those medical bills, my car and insurance situaitons are going to work.

I just to google and start searches like [neck injury car accident chicago]. Try that search, see what comes up. Notice Rosenfeld Injury Lawyers, LLC at #1 in Google?

The rest of the listings are also attorney blogs that are based in Chicago! In other words, there are a select number of Chicago Personal Injury Firms showing up to help.

Now take a look at the top 3 posts. They are pretty good, aren’t they? They are all well written, they have good length, and they really help someone in need.

Rosenfeld’s post is specific to my search and problem. His posts offer REAL value. This firm is also ranking #1 in ALL OF CHICAGO, and this is only a 3 attorney firm (for now).

Now go do a search for [Chicago Personal Injury Lawyer].

Rosenfield is showing #1 Organically, Local Pack and an embedded local ad. They are cannibalizing 60% of the entire Google real estate.

With 113-4.8 star reviews and this exposure, this firm with 3 attorneys is enjoying picking and choosing their clients. They are turning down more cases than they are accepting. Imaging their bankroll!

Because Rosenfeld is showing up when a prospect is looking for help, Google is rewarding them when a prospect is searching for an attorney for that help.

Do you get it now?

SEO is about helping your prospects before they know they need you.

This is the type of content you should have 80% of your focus on. Ever heard of the 80/20 rule? This is it with SEO. The smoking gun.

Of course distribution of that content is important too. But I’m here to simplify it and give you some direction.

This is What You Need

Need is defined by something necessary. There are just some things you need if your plan is to double or triple the number of leads you currently are getting.

A Website is an important obvious need. Your website should bring your prospect through the journey of answering their questions and overcoming their objections. I’m not here to talk about websites in great detail, so if you want to know more you can go learn more here.

Having a Social Mediapresence is kind of important these days. But you don’t need to be jumping on there every day posting about your day. You’ll want to propagate the content you create to your social channels. Pick your favorite three or four. You’ll want a simple profile on each.

Grab a Zapier account and connect your website blog to each of the social channels. Now you never have to log into those channels when new valuable content is created on your blog.

Business Profilesare equally as important as your website. If you have not claimed your Google profile, you <g class="gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling" id="12" data-gr-id="12">simple</g> do not show up on Google. One of the 3 Pillars of Local SEO for Attorneys discusses profiles, it’s the P in CPR.

In about six months, plan on creating Video. This is the best way to convey your physiology to prospective clients before meeting them. Yes, I mean you on camera. If you’re not comfortable with this, there are many alternatives.

In a perfect world, that’s about it. In the world of SEO, propagation is crucial.

InBound Links are Evil

The fundamental foundation of SEO from the first time Larry Page and Sergey Brin created the first Google algorithm was about links…inbound links. Brin had a vision of link hierarchy [source:Wikipedia].

That was 1996. Now in 2019, 2020 and beyond, it’s not just about inbound links. I remember back in 2005, maybe through 2009, we could rank a website practically overnight by sneezing 40,000 links to it.

I had tested almost every way imaginable to fire links to websites. At the end of the day, Google has won that battle and has figured out the world of artificial intelligence to help its algorithm.

The truth is now Google is figuring it out. They are doing a pretty good job at rewarding businesses who help its patrons through the unique buying process of small businesses.

The better business you run, the better Google results you’ll have

It seems simple because it is simple. It’s just not easy. It takes time. A lot of time. Think of it as proving yourself to Google to get that certification….just like how long it took you to prove to your school that you deserved to be an attorney in the United States.

That mountain you’re climbing …. You’ve just reached base camp. Those that reach the summit are farther and fewer between.

Those attorneys that put the time, effort and money into building a competitive practice on the Internet will be greatly rewarded. But you still have to a great lawyer…sort of McDonalds is still a great business with an inferior product. But that’s a conversation for another time.

It’s Just Marketing

When I first started university, I had intended on two majors, business and computer science. I finished five years later with an honor Bachelor of Commerce and double minor in Marketing and computer science.

My first year in a marketing class, one of the first things we learned was Customer Segmentation. This in simple terms is knowing who you are talking to.

If you’re a Criminal Defense attorney, you have to be empathetic to those arrested for a DUI and understand their problems…from their perspective. Their perception is their reality.

Create a solid Service based page that answers their most pressing concerns. Just go back to those initial meetings with DUI clients. What were their first and most pressing questions. Answer those on this page, along with conversion optimization elements.

A Family Law Attorneywho works with fathers will want to provide relief that their case is safe with expected results.

Guide prospects to stories of others, to those who have left reviews or blog posts that discussed several detailed stories of other fathers. You want someone to be able to relate to their situation.

A Personal Injury Attorneywill boast about winning that $3M case against a local drug firm.

Create a press release about case settlements. Distribute those press releases properly to PR distributions services.

You Can’t Be a General Practice Attorney on the Internet

You can’t be a criminal lawyer and hope to rank for personal injury lawyer. Let’s face it, most attorneys would love to have a prominent PI firm. It’s not going to happen, at least not for a while.

Your best bet is to narrow down on specific niches. If you’re a criminal lawyer, be the best criminal lawyer for misdemeanors, or serious drug crimes…you’re not going to get exposure for both quickly.

Find out what you’re best at, along with what you enjoy most and create content that speaks to that audience. Of course a plan is critical to begin with. We will create an initial 1-yr SEO plan for you if you’d like, check it out here.

Every firms plan would be different. You are different than your next competitor, right? Your plan is also different.

Your Marketing Budget Shouldn’t be Less Than Your Coffee Bill

At $5 a coffee, an average of 21 days, that’s less than some SEO services I’ve seen per month. That can’t make sense.

At $1000 per month, you can expect systematic processes employed or the efforts of rookies trying to decipher the seas of processes taught.

Quality SEO is a big piece of all your marketing efforts. Your communication and exposure.

The average attorney in your shoes spends about 5% on target revenue 12 months from now.

So if you want to bill $500,000 in 2020, your marketing spend right now should be $25,000 this year.

With the median Criminal Defense attorney’s salary at over $200k, their firms are grossing 8 figures.

A $2M firm should be spending $100k on marketing, however this is the magic revenue number where marketing spend percentage decreases. Think economies of scale.

Your Next Step

Now you’ve read this far, it’s time you take this next step and schedule some time with me on the phone. I’ll ask you a bunch of questions about your firm and goals and discuss with you what kind of plan it might take to reach that goal by using the internet.

Is your immigration law firm not as successful as you hoped it would be? Read onto learn 7 reasons your immigration law firm isn’t succeeeding.

Immigration law is a hot-button issue right now. You’d think that the average immigration law firm would be burdened with more clients and cases than they could manage, but if anything, the opposite is true.

Some people may blame slow business on there being too many lawyers coming out of law school. Others may assume that they just don’t have the right clients in the area.

The truth is often much simpler than that, and it often has to do with marketing and advertising.

Are you ready to get your firm the business it needs? Read on to learn some of the simple, but impactful, mistakes you could be making when you market your firm.

7 Marketing Mistakes Your Immigration Law Firm is Making

Immigration law is an important subset of law practices, and people need to know that you’re ready and willing to help them.

When you have the right marketing strategy in order, you could do things you never thought possible. If you’re making any of these mistakes, it’s time to get on the right track and get your firm the business and strategy you need to succeed.

1. You Don’t Have a Plan

You have a website that’s up to date with all of your current information. It’s possible that you may even have a Facebook page or a few other social profiles for your firm.

Having certain things you’d use to market yourself isn’t the same thing as having a defined marketing strategy. If you want to grow your firm, you need to sit down and come up with a marketing plan you can follow.

When you’re thinking of your marketing plan, also take time to think about who will execute it. If there’s too much happening internally for someone at the firm to handle it, consider contacting a marketing company that can do the work for you.

2. You Don’t Know Your Target Market

If we were to ask you who your target market is, how would you answer?

This may come as a surprise, but “anyone in need of an immigration lawyer” isn’t a good answer. In order to have a successful immigration law firm, you need to have a clearly defined target market and client.

Take time to really think about your ideal client and what motivates them. Think about how old they are, how much money they make, and why they’d want to use your services.

3. You Don’t Maintain Relationships

The judge has given their ruling and another case has closed. What happens to the relationship with your client after the work is done?

So many businesses rely on word of mouth advertising, and it isn’t any different for lawyers. If your relationship with the client ends once the case is over, you’re missing out on a lot of potential new business.

Find ways to stay in touch with clients after you’re done working with them. You never know if they have a friend, coworker, or family member that could use your help.

Email marketing could be a simple way to keep the lines of communication open between you and previous clients. A short email with law tips and your contact info could be what you need to stay on people’s minds.

You can also use email marketing to check up on clients a few months after their case is over. Write something short and sweet that lets them know you’re thinking of them and want to make sure that they have everything they need.

4. You Rely Too Much On Written Content

A lot of marketing and advertising professionals will tell you that content is king in their realm. In the past content typically meant written words, but now content could be any and all mediums you use to communicate with people.

There’s nothing wrong with writing a few blog posts and social posts, but if you only rely on the written word you could be missing out on some much-needed clients.

English can be a difficult language to learn, and some people consider reading and writing in it to be much harder than speaking it. If you produce videos for your website and social profiles you could reach a lot more people.

5. You Don’t Stand Out From Competitors

If your firm’s big marketing message is that you offer immigration law services, you need to take some time to define what makes you different from other law firms.

Simply saying that you provide certain services isn’t enough to get new clients. They can find plenty of other firms that offer the same service, that’s why you need to find your differentiator and make it a part of your marketing message.

Do you have a bi-lingual front desk staff that can help first-time clients? Does your firm specialize in family reunification cases? Are you in a convenient location or easy to get to by public transit?

Take time to think about why someone should go for you over a competitor and make that a focal point of your marketing message.

6. You Speak in Legalese

It’s no secret that immigration law can be complicated. You may be very familiar with complicated legal language and terms, but your clients won’t be.

Using complicated legal language in your ads can easily distance yourself from your clients. Make sure you’re using language people can understand and take extra time to explain some of the more complicated parts of the legal process.

Remember, legal terms are for judges and lawyers to understand. Your job is to help your client that lacks a legal background.

7. You Don’t Take Reviews Seriously

Word of mouth is still an important way for businesses to find new customers and clients, and review websites have become the new “word of mouth” for the 21st century.

You may not take much stock in online reviews written about your firm, but potential new clients will. You need to make sure that you can be found on popular review platforms, and that you have nice reviews.

Don’t be afraid to ask clients for reviews, especially if you just won a particularly tough case for them. Also be sure to address negative reviews in a calm and rational manner.

Do You Need Marketing Help?

After reading this article you may have realized that your immigration law firm is in desperate need of some marketing work. You may not know where to begin, but we do.

There are a lot of attorneys around, and don’t you think they all want to placed #1 on Google?

Well, we’ve got hundreds of first place listings for attorneys around the country and I’m going to show you how.

I’m still dumbfounded at the opportunities for most attorneys to capitalize using the Internet, and so many missed opportunities.

How about my client in San Jose. They’re dominating Google, BING and Yahoo for every search on iPhones, computers, tablets AND even SIRI!

Imagine being right therewhen a new clients is looking for an attorney just after getting booked for drinking a little much while driving.

Let’s see what your firm can do. First, figure out what keywords people are using to find your local service, I use Google’s free tool. Here, click here.

Here’s a local keyword toolI created to help with finding the zip codes and geomods for your research.

Another option for you is our No Cost Online Exposure Analysis. We’ll do your keyword research and give you the report. We’ll also give you a couple of other reports to help you make a decision of whether Online Marketing is a fit for your company. Here’s the other two reports.

1) Competitive Analysis Research Report

2) Competitive Exposure Risk Report

These reports will help give you a better understanding of what your competition is doing, common searched keywords that are related to your business, and the current online exposure of your firm. Reports like these are essential for determining where your business currently is and the opportunities available to improve this.

Show Your Exposure on the Internet

It’s human nature to eat at a busy restaurant. There is tremendous psychology in this, however, we just need to know people are like herds. So are search engines and SEO for Attorneys.

Image Sourced from https://moz.com/learn/seo/local-search-data-us

The search engines are looking for busy attorneys. Busy Businesses. To a search engine, a busy law firm is one that is being talked about on the Internet. One that is being written about. One that people are interacting with.

A business that is transparent and exposed on the Internet does well with SEO.

A busy attorney on the Internet will have a lot of citations, or links discussing or point back to the business website. Perhaps it’s the local newspaper providing some PR, or it’s a listing in a free wifi directory suggesting you offer free wifi in your office. Perhaps it’s your most influential clients leaving positive reviews and mentioning you on Facebook.

Show Your Authority on the Internet

Search Marketing for Lawyers require quality citations from data providers, public sources, review sites, directories and public relation sites. You want a Review Acquisition System for your firm.

The ranking position of your website is important for a variety of reasons. People tend to give the most trust and authority to the businesses that rank highest on the SERP (Search Engine Results Page).

People assume that because a business ranked number 1 on the SERP, it must be the best.

If your business is not ranking on the first page of results you are missing out on customers.

SEO Ranking is About Marketing

Everything we do to get our clients to #1 is something you can do on your own. Just like I could learn to become an attorney, you can learn how to become an SEO Marketer. But DON’T talk to your web developer.

Think of it this way. A house requires many people, a plumber, electrician, foreman, carpenter and of course, a realtor to sell it. A web developer is the carpenter. I’m the realtor.

A carpenter doesn’t sell the home, surely they can learn the skills. It seems ‘Internet People’ claim to know about Internet Marketing. The problem is, they don’t understand to win on the Internet, it’s marketing, it’s NOT chasing the wonderful Google Algorithm.

I thought I’d share with you a video I made. It’s a short comical video about Google and Local Businesses marketing themselves on the Internet.

It’s really funny! It’s only a couple of minutes on YouTube. Relax for a moment and watch this!

Here’s a BIG excerpt from my book. I sell a step-by-step book and course on this. I developed this. I teach this. My clients have verifiable #1 listings.

You follow this, you’ll make money on the Internet. Maybe then you’ll see some of the massive potential.

The CPR Approach to SEO and Ranking your Law Firm #1 on Google

This is our unique approach to marketing your business to achieve high rankings in the search engines. There are three areas you should be looking at. But before I discuss these three, I want to discuss some basic marketing.

To learn more about the 3 Pillars of Local SEOjust follow this link here!

Segment Your Audience

This is marketing 101…in my first year of college we learned how to segment an audience into different profile…let’s call them a customer persona. Typically, a small business will have one to perhaps 5 client personas. Think about segmenting your potential customers into a group you can define.

For example, you can segment based on age, gender, income level, education, among dozens of factors. Perhaps you’re a courier company…you may cater to private schools and government agencies. Perhaps you’re a Chiropractor, and you may cater to pregnant mothers and children to enhance their performance.

Either way, segment your audience…this is CRUCIAL in the SEO process.

Case Study – How One Attorney Ranked in Top 3 in California

Your law firm is completely different from all other businesses and some marketing efforts are very different from traditional businesses.

Here is a case study of a debt protection attorney located in California.

The Goal

Rank in Top 3 Results in Google for [Debt Protection Attorney in California]

Fitzgerald & Campbell, APLC is a Debt Protection Attorney in California. Providing professional debt, collection protection services, judgements, student loans, collection lawsuits and debt settlement. They wanted prominent Organic Google placement for five core competencies, which include

Judgement

Student Loans

Collection Lawsuits

Debt Settlement

Credit Card Debt

Between their core terms, considering the combination used to discover these services, we are focusing on 100 keywords, tracking the results for both Santa Ana and California based searches.

Ranking high is Google can bring a lot of leads to an attorney when a client has finally decided to hire an attorney. When the client buying cycle moves from research to making the decision to hire, and when an attorney ranks in the top 3 spots, these 3 attorneys enjoy about 90% of online organic search traffic.

This is a real need for attorneys these days. When you rank high, you can generate dozens of new leads weekly.

WON Marketing works on the Three Pillars of Internet Marketing, Organic, Paid and Social. When all three channels are optimized, you will be front and center in your target marketing for new clients.

The Set Up

The initial process <g class="gr_ gr_6 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="6" data-gr-id="6">begun</g> with an extensive and thorough analysis to determine the current state of the firm on the Internet. This included looking at 13 major factors on the website, the internet exposure on profile sites, their social media footprint, content assets, past marketing efforts and overall consumer satisfaction online.

This allowed WON Marketing to create a 1-year marketing plan for the firm that focusses on all organic aspects of gaining new clients from the Internet. This provided a framework for the detailed execution schedule provided to Fitzgerald & Campbell, detailing the exact monthly activity WON Marketing will perform.

During the initial set-up phase, WON Marketing made several adjustments to the website by increasing the page loading speed, ensuring mobile compliancy and website code validation and following all the best practices for On-The-Page factors such as adequate service pages, title and header tags and markup code.

All monthly reporting was created, and the client was educated on the monthly Ranking Reports of 100 keywords, Google Analytics (website traffic), Google Insights (Google profile traffic), the WON Marketing Inventory of Assets, the Monthly Activity Report, the Annual Marketing Plan, the Monthly Execution Plan and the Citations Tracking reports.

The E<g class="gr_ gr_5 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="5" data-gr-id="5">xecution</g>

The 3 Pillars of Local SEO

The organic strategy includes creating exposure on the Internet, such as being listed on local and attorney-based directories, published press releases, articles and online client reviews, however not limited to these examples.

When done properly, this is the formula to get high on the search engines local and organic listings.

Content– The first pillar is content. This includes all types of digital media including, but not limited to, video, articles, press releases and propagation through social channels.

Profiles– The second pillar <g class="gr_ gr_12 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="12" data-gr-id="12">is profiles</g>. This includes using best practices to acquire new business profiles on a regular basis, on sites like Yelp, Angie’s List, Judy’s Book, etc.

Reviews– The third pillar <g class="gr_ gr_13 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar multiReplace" id="13" data-gr-id="13">is reviews</g>. This includes implementing our RAP interface (Review Acquisition Program), monitoring reviews in a timely fashion and identifying your top 10% of <g class="gr_ gr_11 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="11" data-gr-id="11">hero</g> customers.

By creating effective marketing content including Press Releases, Sales Documents, Videos and Client Articles, couples with an effective propagation strategy, WON Marketing created a system of fresh, value added content for clients and prospects.

By demonstrating this content is valuable to the Fitzgerald & Campbell audience through views, likes, shares, time on page, bounce rate and navigation flow, this lends Trust and Authority to the firm, helping increase rankings.

Through a consistent and systematic approach of researching identifying and both Local and Industry profiles, WON Marketing consistently acquired 15+ citation profiles monthly on Santa Ana, California and Attorney related directories. This demonstrates consistency in the branding and marketing efforts for the firm, in turn aiding in rankings.

The Results

For an attorney who focuses on solving serious debt problems, there are over 15 categories where services are provided, with an initial strong focus on the top 5. Whether the keyword search is [Debt Attorney Santa Ana] or [collection harassment lawyer in California], Fitzgerald & Campbell dominate for their local city of Santa Ana and rank #1 in Google for dozens of state related searches in most of their 15 categories, and all of their top 5 categories.

With comprehensive tracking tools, we were able to generate over 24.85k impressions and increased the number of phone calls by over 400 since service begun the summer of 2017.

Thinking About Human AI with SEO

You can’t simply win over Google’s approval by chance. You can’t accidentally hit all six of the human influencers.

This has to be a deliberate and consistent effort on your part. The law firms that deploy a strategy that covers all six laws of influence will find themselves taking in the largest share of client’s year-in-year-out.

And they will do it with an ever-decreasing client acquisition cost.

You have to decide whether you will fall behind the times, or if you’ll embrace the new ‘human AI’. Unfortunately, fancy computers will start deciding which law firms muddle along and which ones thrive.

When an attorney graduates with a law degree and intends on growing their own practice, far too often it is assumed clients will just show up at the door. It is said referrals build a business, which is an important marketing channel, but there is much more that needs to be done.

Your reputation alone, online and with peers, just won’t cut it. There are many ways you can throw mud at the wall for marketing your firm, however there are only a few ways that truly work in the online world.

Having a solid marketing plan if your first step to set yourself apart from the others and demonstrate to potential clients you are their best choice.

Following I outline five Lawyer Marketing Ideas that will help you build that practice this year.

1. Invest in Good SAO

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) results in ranking your business or website high in the search engines for keyword searches.

For example, someone who was just in a car accident would have several questions regarding their case and might search for an attorney using the keyword phrase [car accident attorney].

If you are not in the top 3 spots, you won’t get a phone call.

Search Authority Optimization (SAO) is our flavor of SEO. Many people in the SEO world play a cat and mouse game of chasing the algorithm. Or rather, attempt to reverse-engineer it. This is Google’s best kept secret, with some of the smartest engineers on the planet. This chase-and-play game is for the short-term players field.

SAO on the other hand employs traditional marketing techniques – answers buyers’ objections – in the process. This is true marketing at its finest, creating quality content that’ll resonate with a target audience.

While the process is evaluated on links, exposure, authority, trust and engagement, at the end of the day, the more your business is exposed on the internet, the better you’ll rank.

Some of the best exposure comes in the form of press releases, videos and guest blog posts. Join your local chamber of commerce, distribute a press release to Fox, ABC and NBC, and watch your link count and rankings improve.

2. Have a Functional Converting Website

This is much easier to say than employ. Let’s look at a website from two perspectives.

Usability & Conversion

Functional Structure

Usability & Conversion

Far too often do I see law firm websites that are simply a digital brochure and break many marketing rules, such as the most basic rule. The 5 W’s….who, what, when, where, why.

When a prospect lands on a webpage, these questions should be answered in visual and written form, above the fold, to have answered in 10 seconds or less.

A fancy picture of cowboys on horses for a Texas attorney is poor. An image should say “We’re a Personal Injury Law Firm in Dallas”.

Prospective clients all go through a buying cycle when looking for your services. A car accident victim has questions, a personal injury suit would like to know implications, a client who just got a DUI may want to know their options….

By having content that answers the buyer’s questions and taking a prospective client on a journey through the website is much more critical than how it looks.

Website Functionality

Building a website is like building a house…which requires a project manager, electrician, plumber, carpenter and real estate agent to sell it.

A website requires a programmer, graphic designer, project manager and marketer. Sure, I can program and manage projects, but my skills are marketing. Understanding human psychology along with the English language is an art in it-self.

A website should load in 2 seconds or less. It should have a well-designed navigation. Elements like map embedding and schema are crucial. From header tags, title tags & naming conventions, best practices should always be followed. And I’d guess 80% of websites have many holes in them.

Check your website with Google’s Pagespeed Insightsand Pingdom’s Speed Test.

3.Provide On-Going Valuable Content

You’ll hear ‘content is king’ in the world of internet marketing. I wanted to shrivel in a ball and throw the towel in the first time I heard this.

Marketing is about providing value to an audience that’ll consume the message. In other words, answering buyer objections before they come up. And make sure that content is easy to get to.

This is a piece of website usability. Consider the law services you provide. Brain Injury or Car Accident personal injury attorney? Well someone who was just in a car accident might want to know the implications to the law, the average time of court cases in your state. Point is, you can come up with a dozen questions or more that prospective clients ask.

Good content can mean different things, but how it’s consumed is also important. Your writing style, can a reader skim the piece and know what’s about. Do you have video to support your greatest claims? Do you have a frequently asked questions section for each of your services, on their own page on the website?

Include Video to Build Trust

Images can help really enhance your branding, but video can really seal the deal and earn new clients.

Video is simply engaging. When you create a video for your firm, a video can simply be a narration of a blog post, a question in your FAQ or a testimonial. Distribution should be your website or your blog and all social media channels, and hosted on your YouTube channel.

Albert Mehrabianconducted one of my favorite studies ever – verbal and nonverbal communication. We’ve heard that 93% of all communication is non-verbal…this is where that comes from.

Video provides the element of emotion that written words simply can not. A prospect gets to see you, hear you, feel your voice. This goes a long way in conversion.

4.Reviews & Testimonials

Reviews are merely the digital form of word-of-mouth. Sharing your client’s experience have tremendous value for prospective clients.

But it’s not as easy as giving a good service. You need a review implementation systemin place.

A client review is where a client leaves their opinion about you or your firm on a 3rd party site like Google, Yelp & Facebook. While there are dozens of other places to leave reviews, such as AVVO, those first three are paramount.

Ideally you want your firm to acquire 2 to 4 reviews per month.

A testimonial is best served as a video, which can be housed on your YouTube channel and showcased on your website.

Search engines do use reviews in their algorithm, but more importantly, are possibly the greatest single factor in determinizing a prospect’s conversion to make the phone call.

Always reach out to past clients and as them to leave you a review, and DO NOT use a review gateway on your website. This is a BIG NO.

5.Invest in PPC Advertising

Organically marketing your practice is critical, period. Without a brand and message, you will not convert new prospects. But SAO takes time. Video can be expensive.

Paid advertising on the internet is like gambling in Las Vegas. Most people are losing money while the hotels are getting rich. The same applies for advertising on Google and Facebook. It’s a tough game to navigate.

However, the benefit of instant qualified traffic is like nothing else. When you can dial in a profitable campaign, yielding a greater return than your investment, you know every dollar spent is going to net you a profit. It’s beautiful.

Additionally, studies show that a user’s propensity to click your listing increases when you have both an organic and paid listing. Plus you take up 100% more of the search engine results page real estate – sucking this from your competitors.

Conclusion

The right marketing mix is paramount to win at the game of internet marketing for lawyers. By starting at the basics of marketing, you can easily stand out from your competitors. These five marketing tips will not only get your more qualified traffic, but great conversion.

4. Citations

Office / Warehouse Walkthrough

Testimonial Video

Operational (for product / service)

Commercial (advertisement for product / service)

Distribution to YouTube is critical. Optimize video title and description. Clear concise title that is keyword rich. Include link in description.

Promote through Social Channels once distributed and optimized.

6. Local PR

Create and distribute an effective press release. Hire a local writer from the local news paper. Distribute the local press release to at least ten local publications, including:

Local Newspaper

Regional Newspaper

Local FREE Publications (pick one up a Chiropractor’s office)

Local Chamber of Commerce

Local College – Approach business admin

Try to have at least one new press release that is news worthy for your business once every quarter.

7. Website On-The-Page SEO

This is only a partial list of the factors and represents the most important items to complete on your website. You can give these instructions to your web developer. Remember, this really only helps the search engines fully understand what your website is all about and giving it credibility. This will not improve conversion on your website.

Validate your HTML code so it is “spider” compliant. http://validator.w3.org/

Text link navigation at the bottom of the page. Use your keywords as anchor text.

The Title Tag should be compelling and keyword focused.

Your description tag needs to work hand-in-hand with the Title to get the searcher to “click” on the listing.

Every page should have a unique (60% of the words completely original) Title & Description.

H1 tag should be used and should be very compelling

Add ALT tags to your main graphics and do not attempt to fool the Search Engines here.

Title Tag

Meta Description

H1 tag to begin the content

First paragraph of content

Appearing in the filename (or directory name)

Used in anchor text to either an internal page or relevant external site.

Fix bad links and create XML Sitemap and submit to Google.

8. Company Blog

This is a critical piece for any Internet Marketing Strategy for a business. Almost every piece of marketing communication can be hosted on a blog including all types of media. Try to get a new blog post once a week. Here are some tips on for your blog.

Use WordPress Self Hosted. It’s free, hosting is cheap.

Use SEO Plugins (Yoast is my favorite)

Blog Weekly

Internal Links to your Website on blog posts

Opt-in Conversion Optimization (Welcome Gate / PopUp / Scipt). Consider an email auto responder once they opt-in.

Create compelling content prospects can relate to

9. External Links

Link Building is critical for Organic SEO Rankings in the SERPs. Find sources to link to the following pages, including your root domain. Remember, links are not citations. You can have a link from another blog to your website, or an industry forum. There is a lengthy strategy behind links, but for the purpose of ranking a business, building links is your last major activity you should be working on. If everything else is done properly, links will come organically…which is essence is ironic since links are the premise for original organic ranking.

Location Based Pages

Local newspaper (PR Campaigns)

Chamber or Networking Groups

V’s

Local Directories / Phonebooks

Theme Related Pages

Directories / Data Providers

Social Networking Groups and Sites

High Authority Exposure

10. Systems for Measurement and Correction

Create the systems for measurement in your business, and measure at least the following items for your online marketing campaign.

Bob Parsons, CEO of GoDaddy said “Everything that is measured, improves”.

Here are some resources and tips on what to measure.

Considering reviews, we’re going to be looking at the benefits of reviews, quantity versus quality, establishing profile Authority and social and review ranking, review filters, review creation, review acquisition strategies and patterns, Rich snippets, review coding and finally an overview of review sites their impact industry perception.

What is a Review?

A review is a personal evaluation of a movie, publication, game, music , book; a piece of hardware like a car, home appliance, or computer; or an event, such as a live music concert, a play, and finally we’re here to talk about reviews for businesses, such as Restaurants, dry cleaners, apartment management companies, mechanics, doctors, day spas, limousine services, law firms, and other brick and mortar businesses who lose and gain customers daily based on their past and current customers’ opinions.

There are 1000s of local business review sites and directories, but as a business owner, you should first pay attention to the truly important ones already showing up in Google, Yahoo!, and Bing for your keywords. You can list your business on the sites I’m going to talk about later where past and current customers can review for free, although some have paid versions in order to “expand your page” like MerchantCircle and CitySearch, it’s not always necessary because they will take reviews all day (more content for them).

Review Benefits

There are many reasons that benefit a local business in terms of reviews. While considering online marketing principles, reviews accomplish three things. Ranking, conversion, and service area. There are many misconceptions about how reviews influence ranking, many don’t consider the importance of conversion and finally reviews solve a very common problem among many types of businesses.

Directly from one of Google’s own pages when discussing complex code for micro data formatting to convey ratings they have the following text “This section describes how you can mark up your rating information to use images (for example, an image of four stars) to convey ranking information. “

This is yet theonly public information from Google that explicitly says reviews influence rank, but this is enough proof for me.

Getting customer reviews is an important step in improving your rankings in the Google Local Business Results. Ask for a review anytime someone compliments your services. Implementing a customer review policy in your company could dramatically improve your rankings.

Ranking

There are several factors that can be measured for particular review by a search engine. For example, quantity of reviews, quality of reviews, review acquisition, location or review, review acquisition patterns among sources, data of sources and of course source politics. We are going to be taking a look at all of these factors and what influence they might have on your ranking.

Conversion

When a prospect lands on a particular places page, we already know that reviews are a high influence towards the consumer’s perception of the business. We’re going to be considering why only a small number reviews are shown and discussed the social review ranking within these places profiles and how each of these reviews influences the consumers conversion towards a call to action on that business.

We’re going to be considering which review sites have high influence within Google places and how to influence the activity in a positive manner for each of those sites. By driving a high quality review system into a local business insurers that properties like Google places only shows reviews that provide the highest conversion to a call to action. While some businesses are focusing on Internet marketing efforts of driving traffic, few go to the length of improving their conversion ratio and therefore there is a massive opportunity to drive a call to action for your clients. Make sure you make this an important part of your strategy for your clients to ensure a high quality service provided to them and to help keep your clients for long-term.

Service Area

Most service-based businesses face a significant problem when marketing themselves on the Internet. For a variety of reasons, different businesses in different geographical areas clearly different service areas. Service area is defined by the area in which the business will provide its services or the geographical reach in which customers will travel in order to do business with that company.

Reviews are a very important part of establishing trust towards establishing your service area in the eyes of online websites like Google places. Let’s face it, a business’ service area essentially is where their customers reside. Whether it’s a business that travels to a consumer’s home or business or the company that tracks clientele to its storefront, its service area defined by a web of its customers. We know the search engines know exactly location of where these reviews are being left based on GPS, IP address information, cellular triangulation or user input. When users leave reviews that are trusted more than less authoritative reviewers, those particular reviews provide further trust to a search engines on establishing a web of your reviews.

Local Search Review Profiles

Reviewers, Trust and Authority

A reviewer can either be a guest or a registered user, typically on a review site. We already know that reviews can be left on any website, but trust is assigned to that particular website and review. We are going to be taking a look at a list of sites that we know of high trusted authorities within the major search engines. Within these sites is a community of registered users. When a registered user leaves a review, that user could have a review that offers tremendous value or could be a bogus review from a competitor. Both the search engine and the review sites and an algorithm are in place to rank reviews

Review Profile Usage Patters

The usage patterns of a particular user within a review site can potentially have many factors that are measured. For example, a reviewer might consistently have reviews that are three stars or less, but we know published by yelp that 85% of all reviews across their site and the web of three stars or more. Therefore the user that consistently has lower score reviews, will be assigned less trust for their reviews because they do not follow the norm of the general population.

Another example is the reviewer that has multiple profiles on multiple sites and leaves multiple negative reviews for one business when this goes against their typical review submission pattern. This would raise a red flag for search engine of less trust within that particular review.

There are likely dozens and dozens of scenarios that we can come up with where consumers try and harm a local business in the search engines but because of filters and an algorithm in place, the review sites and search engines are getting much better at being able to sniff out these people. In other words don’t fret from a few negative reviews and focus on pushing your happy customers to leave reviews. When I say pushing, I mean giving them the right tools so they can go ahead and say all those nice things that they are to have been saying.

Establish Profile Authority & Social Review Ranking

Establishing profile Authority can be a little bit of a challenge because you are attempting to influence the customers of your client. You need to work with your client to ensure that they are doing everything they can to help influence acquisitions in a positive manner and in turn focusing on those profiles that have high authority.

It is common sense that a search engine’s goal is to provide the best user experience for their own users. It makes sense that the best user experience would be to have the most democratic unbiased information for consumers to make decisions about that business. So, this is what the filters and the algorithms are consistently trying to accomplish. As much as we can try and learn everything we can about all of those factors and give the search engines exactly what we think they want, it is obvious to focus on our clients customers rather than the search engines provide the best user experience.

Profile Authority is established by users who have a common typical review pattern. There are certain norms and thresholds that dictate what a common typical review pattern is, but the easiest way to ensure that your customers are reviewers with high authority are reviewers that essentially engage in a community and a natural organic form. The best way to ensure that are reviewers are natural and organic, is for us to provide the education and the tools to leave these reviews on sites that have high influence and to ensure that these reviewers are consistently engaging in their community and reviewing multiple other businesses in their area.

Drive Education to Build Profile Authority

You have many options available to you on how to drive the appropriate education to your customers’ customers.

We are going to take a look at a review acquisition strategy. There is a document that is included in The Accelerated Program for Local Online Marketers course and is intended to help educate our customers’ on the process to leave reviews. This is an excellent piece to drive education to your customers to encourage them to encourage their customers to continually leave reviews. I will cover this further in another video.

As you might know, e-mail marketing is a critical strategy for local business to market themselves in my opinion. You can drive short education pieces through e-mail marketing to your customers’ customers. This will give you an opportunity to potentially earn the right to providing you know marketing as a service.

With all SEO campaigns now, we install a WordPress blog for our clients. This is another great place to continually drive content about reviews to educate our customers community.

Creating and sending content to be published by local networking groups and theme related sites is a great way to drive education and acquire a citation on your client’s behalf.

Obviously, social media campaign with links that drive to content sources that add value to the end-user is a strategy that works well when you have qualified followers or friends.

We can discuss different strategies that you can provide education to the end-user about the value of reviews for both of them and their vendor. The point here is that we have to drive this education to the end-users or our system reviews might fail.

Testimonials and Check-Ins

Testimonials, reviews and check ins are channels of communication from the customer to the business. In essence, this is exactly what business is, communication from a business to a customer and vice versa.

You have a lot of choices on how to market your clients online, but I assure you if you focus your efforts on the one item that is most important to every single business then you will get success for your client. In other words, focus on the customer. Pretty simple, huh?

Testimonials are intermediated word-of-mouth marketing, and they do work when credible. In fact they work very well indeed if you work hard to get the right kind of testimonial. They can provide the much-needed social proofthat tips a wavering prospect into a paying customer.

A researcher named Mehrabian was particularly interested in how certain listeners received their information about a speaker’s general attitude in situations where the facial expression, tone, and words are sending conflicting signals.

The results are impressive.

55% from the visual component

38% from the auditory component

7% from language

This means that the words we choose influence human behavior with only a weight of 7%, our tonality represents 38% and our physiology represents 55%!

If this is true, then I want video testimonials of people saying great things about my company!

Social Check-Ins

Many social networking services, such as Foursquare, Facebook, Yelp and Gowalla allow users to “check in” to a physical place and share their location with their friends.

Users can check in to a specific location by text messaging or by using a mobile app on a smartphone–the application will use the phone’s GPS to find the current location.

Many apps have a “Places” button where a user can see a list of nearby places into which the user can check in. If a location is not on the nearby places list, the user can add the location directly from the phone. Once a user has checked in, they have the option of sharing their location with friends in services such as Twitter or Facebook.

Check-in and Location Based Marketing

Check-ins, badges, Mayors, stamps on passports, rewards, and other new concepts from the past are popping up everywhere on the Internet as the latest trend in location based services are applied to marketing purposes. It’s a blast from the past, isn’t it? This is just a loyalty program. No different than my coffee punch card, but on steroids. Now I get the 8thcup for free, and all my friends know about it. What about flying? I check-in at the counter. If I give them my information, I get rewards with ‘air miles’ now when I check in. I do something, exchange some value and then get rewarded if we exchange information. Same model here folks, maybe this will tell us something about how these check-ins might work for a business.

Volume and Velocity

But let’s slow down for a moment, there is a big difference between some of the old check-ins the new ones. We know that checking out at a supermarket or checking-in in an airplane typically means an exchange in value. They paid someone. Take Foursquare check-ins….the rewards, on the other hand, are offered to individuals that just showed up. I’m not quite sure yet on this. Rewarding someone for showing up makes little sense. Arguably the reward gets them in the door, and they need to be in the door to buy.

The real value of Check-ins should reward more than just physical presence. But shouldn’t the real question be is how you get the customer to the door from the beginning.

Local Search Reviews, Rich Snippets and Ratings

Sometimes I have to do something in this business that isn’t so much fun. HTML is one of those. Coding in fact is it. Like accounting, I wish I never have to deal with it but you do.

I’m no coder. But I have to have some knowledge of it, at least from a practical standpoint.

Rich Snippets are a fancy way of saying “I want a review to be on my website and I want Google to count it as a review”.

Or I frequently hear that people have a hard time getting a great customer to leave a review. I think of one student of mine, another Scott, who struggled with this because, his client base, as a handy man, were generally much older and hated the computer. They loved him, loved his work and wanted to help him grow, even though they agreed to leave a review, no one did. This is a solution for Scott to get handwritten testimonials, scan the images, attached the images to his website along with some special code so the search engines count those reviews. When done properly, these reviews have significant impact.

Rich Snippets for Local Search

Reviews and testimonials don’t have to be on a review site. They can be on your own website.

When review information is marked up in the body of a web page, a search engine can identify it and use it to understand and present the information on your places pages. For example, it can be used to create rich snippets to be displayed on a search results page, or on a Place Page. Review information such as ratings and descriptions can help users to better identify pages with good content.

Beyond improving the presentation of your pages in search results, rich snippetsalso help users find your website when it references a local place. By using structured markupHTML to describe a business or organization mentioned on your page, you not only improve the Web by making it easier to recognize references to specific places but also help the search engines surface your site in local search results.

Use structured markupto help search engines identify the places mentioned on your site. If your site contains reviewsor other information about businesses and organizations, then the structured markup helps precisely correlate your pages with the place mentioned.

With structured markup, such as Microdata or RDF, you can label each piece of text to make it clear that it represents a certain type of data like a business name, an address, or a review rating. This is done by adding HTML tags that help computers understand the data. These tags don’t affect the appearance of your pages, but Google and any other services that look at the HTML can use the tags for a more precise understanding of the items referenced on the page.

Review Ratings

Most ratings systems use a 5-point scale

By default, Google assumes that your site uses a 5-point scale, where 5 is the best possible rating and 1 is the worst.

Many reviews sites show ratings on a different scale-for example a rating that ranges from 1-10 points or from 0-100%.

Buyers who complete a Google Checkout transaction will receive an email asking them to review their experience. This doesn’t apply for most business, but interesting they are promoting solicitation of reviews, where Yelp is hard against soliciting reviews. I don’t promote review solicitation, unless the customer has already verbally expressed a positive experience, in which time you can ask to have those words ‘digitized’.

Buyers reviews include a star rating on a scale of one-to-five as well as an optional comment field to discuss delivery time, their customer service experience, and overall satisfaction.

With the introduction of the open social graph at F8 by Facebook, I suspect soon we’ll see and open business graph, and using Facebook’s comment fields, it’s likely and possible we’ll see the rating system imposed on their status fields.

Your overall rating score is the average number of stars awarded by all buyers who have posted ratings for you.

Response

If you’re unhappy with a buyer’s comments, search engines encourage you to contact the buyerdirectly to resolve any disputes or issues that may have led to a low rating. This is discussed under the topic “Online Reputation Management’.

You may also respond to a review by clicking Respond publiclybelow the buyer’s review, which will append your comments on the Review Detail. You can use this field to explain a situation that may have led to the low rating. For example, if the business was closed due to bad weather, you could respond publicly with the note with that reason. The buyer will then have one more opportunity to respond to your statement. These comments will appear beneath your response.

Crawling & Coding

As mentioned, with structured markup you can label each piece of text to make it clear that it represents a certain type of data. This is done by adding HTML tags that help computers understand the data.

You can mark up either individual reviews or aggregate review information—for example, the average rating for a local business or the total number of user reviews submitted.

Review Properties

Google recognizes the following Review properties, derived from the hReviewmicroformat. In general, you can use the same property name for microdata, microformats, and RDFa; where the microdata/RDFa and microformats property names differ.

Here is the HTML code marked up with microdata:

<div>

<div itemscope itemtype=”http://data-vocabulary.org/Review”>

<span itemprop=”description”>I work for an international telecommunictons company and NAPAREX has proven time and time again to make sure all of our shipping needs are taken care of. In the face paced industry that we in, it is imperative that our shipments get to their destination on time and NAAPREX has always stuck to their delivery dates.</span>

</div>

There is something I want you to notice here. According to the recommendations, we’re not linking to the user’s profiles.

Add the following code to the markup that links their name to their professional profile.

<a href=http://ca.linkedin.com/pub/franco-raso/6/423/13b>Ronco</a>so it

looks like this now

<div>

<div itemscope itemtype=”http://data-vocabulary.org/Review”>

<span itemprop=”itemreviewed”>NAPAREX</span>

Reviewed by <span itemprop=”reviewer”><a href=http://ca.linkedin.com/pub/franco-raso/6/423/13b>Ronco</a> </span> on

<time itemprop=”dtreviewed” datetime=”2009-01-06″>Jan 6</time>.

<span itemprop=”summary”>We Recommend Naparex!</span>

<span itemprop=”description”>I work for an international telecommunictons company and NAPAREX has proven time and time again to make sure all of our shipping needs are taken care of. In the face paced industry that we in, it is imperative that our shipments get to their destination on time and NAAPREX has always stuck to their delivery dates.</span>

</div>

</div>

Once you link to their profile, if the customer is willing, this is the BIG kahuna for trust. Ask them to spread the word of their testimonial on their social media profiles. This closes the link and will assign significant trust to the review directly on the website and will show high in the SERPs.

Local Review Acquisition Strategies

Sometimes you just to do something in life that isn’t that much work but has a major impact. This is my review acquisition strategy.

Testimonials and reviews are very important for a variety of different reasons. This is a system that is intended to be implemented into any small business to continually encourage reviews. Motivational systems can also be added to the system to further motivate employees and partners that help encourage reviews. I have no problem giving hundred dollar bonus on a monthly basis to employees who get the most reviews, even for our customers.

I have developed a review acquisition strategy that you can drop into your client’s business to help acquire several reviews from reviewers that have high authority.

This is a document that our agency gives to every one of our search marketing customers. Our goal is to give them the education that they need and the management tools in order to continually encourage reviews on their business. They should not solicit reviews ever, but recognize when a customer says something nice about their business that they encourage the customer to make the effort to digitize their complements and leave a review online.

This education is accomplished with this document. In a document provides education on an

overview of reviews

what are reviews

the value of receiving reviews in the online marketing game

different review sites

implications to the search engines

good versus bad reviews and finally

customer e-mail template for encouraging customer reviews.

The challenge here is that you are relying on your customer to encourage activity inside of their business that demonstrates results that you are measured on. You obviously cannot force your customer to do anything and they are paying you for results. This is where you have to over deliver.

The education in this document provides supportive evidence that reviews are extremely important for their business without the implications of ranking in the search engines. In other words, if the search engines didn’t exist this document would still exist.

We provide a little bit of education on conversion and how reviews with a positive rating have increased customer spend by over 20%, provided by a leading web research organization, Comscore.

We also provide some education that your customers will get ahead of the game by establishing trust towards their service area.

Sometimes customers get a little bit scared or concerned about negative reviews online. The fact is that no matter what anybody does they are eventually going to get negative reviews. By introducing the concept of Online Reputation Management, which is another section and topic included in this course, we introduce a new service to the customer and the importance of having the systems in place to measure their online reputation.

We also discussed the importance of and sending your employees and contractors to encourage these reviews. A delivery service person may want to keep their business card with them to hand out to happy customers. The more they hand out the greater their reward.

If a customer ever tells you how much they value your service or asks what they can do for you, ask them for a testimonial. In fact, even if they don’t, ask anyway if they’ve said they like your service! Testimonials are thatvaluable.

Local Review Sites

A review site is a websitewhere reviews can be posted about businesses, products, or services. In some cases, even people. These days, these websites are using Web 2.0techniques to gather reviews from customers. Sometimes they may employ professional writers to author reviews on the topic of concern for the site.

Review sites are typically also portal sites and data aggregators. However, not all review sites are portal site and not all portal sites are review sites. For this reason we have to classify certain sites as review sites.

Industry Perception

Many, in fact most review sites make little attempt to control postings, or to verify the reviews. Faultfinders claim that positive reviews are sometimes written by the businesses or individuals being reviewed, while negative reviews might be written by competitors, disgruntled employees, or anyone with a grudge against the business being reviewed. In addition, studies of research methodology have shown that in forums where people are able to post opinions publicly, group polarization often occurs, and the result is very positive comments, very negative comments, and little in between, meaning that those who would have been in the middle are either silent or pulled to one extreme or the other. This is critical to understand. As you implement a review acquisition strategy for your customers it is imperative that you identify and focus on your clients top customers immediately to leave reviews. This will initially establish a positive should group polarization occur in your clients profile page. Another criticism against sites that rely on income from businesses is that they are reluctant to post negative since that undermines their business model. This leads to a conflict of interest.

The fact is that the review sites, like Google, want to filter all the garbage. Sometimes they don’t get it right, but they are always looking to improve their algorithms. We have to assume they are getting better daily, like Google with their algorithm for search. With this assumption it makes no sense to me to game the review filters. It’s like chasing the algorithm. We shouldn’t be focusing on either quantity or quality of reviews, but focus on the natural organic adoption or reviews with existing customers. I feel if this is our objective we will always meet the needs set forth by the review sites.

Forget those Critics!

Most review sites admit that reviews may not be objective, and that ratings may not be statistically valid. I know this will work itself out over time. Most consumers are yet trained to leave reviews. Many businesses have yet adopted a acquisition strategy. If the trends continue, like a 100% increase in reviews for Yelp in 2010, then this is likely the year that’ll curb much of this critics. It’s for this reason that we tested profile review authority and sure enough, different profiles are assigned different levels of trust. Just focus on quality and you’ll clear those filters. Let’s talk more about filters now.

Review Filters

As we have been talking about all of the review sites have review filters. Here’s some information about those filters.

Reviews that reflect perfectly legitimate experiences are sometimes filtered out by the review filter’s algorithmic processes. Don’t worry about this. To solve this, have the reviewer leave additional, unbiased reviews for other local businesses. Within a few weeks, that reviewers profile filter should be lifted.

Reviews are never deleted by the review filter; they are always shown on users’ profile pages but not the business that is being reviewed unless you dig deep. The review filter simply groups established users’ reviews from their user pages onto business pages. This automated process sometimes creates the perception that reviews are being deleted and re-added over time; what’s actually happening is users are becoming more-or-less established over time.

The best word of mouth is organic and unsolicited. As counter-intuitive as it may seem, Yelp discourages business owners from asking people to write reviews about their businesses. It’s tough for an algorithm to tell the difference between a business owner aggressively putting a laptop in front of a client and saying, “Give me 5 stars!” and that same business owner flipping the laptop around and manufacturing a fake 5-star review about themselves. Follow my review acquisition process to avoid violating the T & C’s of Yelp and others, yet still have the systems to drive unsolicited, organic reviews.

Both positive and negative reviews can be affected. This is to protect Dentist A from Dentist B’s writing of malicious 1-star reviews about his competitor.

SEO helps here too. Identifying relevant, authoritative sites to have links going to a user’s profile will increase the trust and authority for that profile, as long as it’s relevant sites and not just link building.

Local Reviews Website List

This should not be confused as the data provider list to acquire citations. The list is very similar, but these reviews sites are listed in order of review preference. Please be aware as these companies grow and change, some might be better, others might get worse. Use this list priority with a grain of salt and do your due diligence to uncover other sites.

Now that we are reminded that marketing a business on the Internet follows traditional marketing principles, we know from organic search engine optimization that links are very important for ranking and now I am telling you that citations from highly relevant sources are also important. So I guess the question becomes what is the difference between a citation and a link. Let’s take a look.

Citations are merely Web references of the company in question. When referencing a company online, there are certain pieces of information that are important to reference such as the company name, it’s address and its unique local phone number. We learned this was a N .A .P. for name, address, and phone number.

On occasion, search engines and these data providers collect information from public sources and while it’s not as important to ensure that these public sources are accurate, is worthy noting that when dealing with these other sources that you provide them with identical NAP information. For example, when a business requires a business phone number from the local telephone provider, typically they automatically receive insert into their Yellow Pages and upsell ad space. The information provided to the telephone provider should be exactly the same as you would in your Google places account. This is a source of information for Google that they trust.

Local Citation Sources

Data Providers

Following is a list of data providers that search engines pull information from, because as we’ve discussed Google Places is merely data aggregator. While there are other data providers evidence has clearly indicated that these are the top data providers that Google pulls is information from in these following seven data providers you should check and ensure that the formatting of your NAP is identical from provider to provider.

Public Sources

On occasion, search engines and these data providers collect information from public sources and while it’s not as important to ensure that these public sources are accurate, it’s worth noting that when dealing with these other sources that you provide them with identical NAP information.

These other sources may include company annual reports, SEC information, federal state and city governments, various business magazines, newspapers and local publications, and Postal Service information.

Of course these public sources are typically for larger firms. As an internal rule of thumb, when a client provides us with over $1000 per month in revenue, we will look at public sources.

Annual Reports

depending on the state, once a business reaches certain revenue mark, or if the business is public, annual reports are published. This is good content to get exposed and perhaps the company blog or a partner’s blog. The annual report should be available for download in PDF format and the business NAP should remain consistent.

SEC Information

The mission of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is to protect investors, maintain fair, orderly, and efficient markets, and facilitate capital formation.

Federal, State and City Governments

When registering your company, you must have it registered with the state, feds and your local business directories. Confirm your NAP in all of these sources.

Citations Acquisition Strategies

Local search engines

The search engines crawl each other to find citations that will validate or correct the business information in their own database. Additionally, some engines and data share information with each other typically through a data leasing arrangement or syndication.

For example, you’ll frequently see a business’s Yahoo Local profile show up in the ‘Web Pages’ tab of its Google Places Listing. There are other second-tier portals that show up frequently as well, such as dexknows.comand Yelp.com

Local blogs

Local blogs are a great place to get a business listed. These vary by geography, but if you simply perform a search on your favorite engine for “[geomod] blog,” you’ll see good candidates. Please reference the organic search engine optimization videos on more methods to use the search engines to find theme or local blogs. You can also just use your GeoMod for a standard search in Google and choose the ‘blogs’ option on the left. Play with this a little, and note the blogs that show up on the top, and stay on the top of the listings when changing the date range. For example, if you search for ‘all time’ and switch to only the last week and find the same blog, chances are this a highly indexed, popular blog.

The blogs that show up for these kinds of searches are generally very well-indexed by the search engines, and highly associated with a particular neighborhood, city, or region. Businesses that are mentioned or linked on these blogs are viewed as trusted, relevant results in the Local search engines.

Locally-focused directories

Like Local blogs, Local directories are well-indexed by the search engines and are highly associated with a particular city or region. Directories which are edited by a human are much better than those which are built around an algorithm where anyone can enter information. Human-edited directories are less susceptible to spam, and are therefore more trusted by the search engines. Best of the Web’s Regional Directoryand Yahoo’s Regional Directoryare two human edited trusted sources. You can perform searches for things like “[geomod] directory” to find good prospects for these kinds of citations.

Theme Based Sites

There are many different ways to acquire authority based theme related exposure on a variety of different sites. For example, most industries have niche-based or industry associations. These associations have opportunities for memberships, typically have online social sites or forums and many have different social media feeds. Participating in these conversations will provide your business with exposure. If you ever get written about, or be one of the faces in the crowd, these theme related authority sites may publish something in your regards. This obviously ties into PR campaigns as previously discussed when putting together a full execution strategy. Do a search for [THEME Social] or [THEME Forum], such as [dentist forum].

Theme Related Citations

When discussing theme related pages, the same principles and strategies taught in Organic Search Engine optimization for theme related directories and data providers will absolutely apply in this case. A search engine is merely referencing the citation rather than a link if you had the opportunity to acquire that link.

Theme related directory for a particular dentist as an example would be a website www.findadentist.com. Sometimes these sites require paid inclusion and this should never be confused with paid money for a link, because you are paying for inclusion into the directory and may or may not get a link.

And finally this leads into theme related authority exposure.

Blogs and Directories

If a website, blog or directory is not focused on a particular geographical region and if that website is focused on topics and keywords related to the audience in question, it is likely a theme related site. For example, take the same day delivery business. There is a social site on the NING network called ‘Couriers of the World”. The dental industry has Facebook groups, forums and online discussions. the membership directory of your trade organization, or a blog that is popular among readers in your industry will likely be crawled by the Local search engines for citations. Searches like “[geomod] directory” or even “[theme keyword] directory” will give you some ideas of the kinds of sites on which to get listed. Try [theme blog] as well. Reference the organic SEO section for more search phrases.

Social Media

Social media marketing is the art of using different types of mediafor social interaction, using highly accessible and scalable communication techniques. Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue.

Essentially, the greater reach with influencers with your content, the greater trust and authority is assigned to that citation source.

Take for example any local greasy spoon restaurant. Guy Fieri is the host to diners, drive-ins and dives, food network’s unique television show with a crazy dude the sunglasses and a spiked white hair. What if he came by this local greasy spoon and provided a positive review, either tweeted about it or left a comment on Facebook. One would think as a micro-celebrity that review should have a greater impact than other reviews because he is a well-known food connoisseur and hosts his own food television show. Search engines are looking at many factors to evaluate social profiles in determining relevance and authority for reviews and citations. Therefore some additional factors that should be added to this list could be a user’s frequency and geographical footprint pattern to determine the validity of that review or citation.

Thus, using social media as a form of marketing has taken on whole new challenges. It is most effective if marketing efforts through social media revolve around the genuine building of authority. Someone performing internet marketing for a company must honestly convince people of their genuine intentions, knowledge, and expertise in a specific area or industry through providing valuable and accurate information on an ongoing basis.

There are many ways authority can be created and influence can be accomplished such as: participation in Wikipediawhich actually verifies user-generated content and information more than most people may realize. Try providing valuable content through social networks on platforms such as Facebookand Twitter. When you create an article for SEO, tweet it. When a new blog post is created, post a link on Facebook.

Your goal is get the information shared on Facebook, Linkedin or Twitter. If a friend or follower shares your information, each share is a citation. The more shares, the busier the restaurant looks to Google and therefore it’ll assign trust towards the business in question.

As a result of social media and the direct or indirect influence of social media marketers consumers are more likely to make buying decisions based on what they read and see in platforms we call “social” but only if presented by someone they have come to trust. That is why a carefully designed social media strategy has become an integral part of any internet marketing plan. This influences both conversion and driving traffic.

Many restaurants have gained success by engaging into this game with their audience and assigning discounts or online only deals.

Consider this. A coupon in a newspaper. As a marketer it’s not about reducing the profit but a coupon is meant to increase the volume. What is really messed is the value in the brand of that coupon. I would never keep an advertisement for business but if it’s good to get me a free soda next time I get a pizza I will keep that paper indefinitely in my drawer. Every time I open a drawer I see their brand. For this reason we have to rethink the coupon and social media.

As an example, by offering rewards for those that have gained mayorship from foursquare or yelp is a way to encourage repeat business and provide a perception of a certain culture. You can make this fun and in turn you have whole bunch of prospects and customers that are regurgitating and sharing all of your information on their favorite social networks.

Consider creating some viral content. An insurance company might want to discuss the last five years of the rising levels of the local river and their thoughts and implications for what could happen to the town if nothing is done. Maybe this video would be an exaggeration but they could talk about certain buildings that are wiped out. This would create fear in our community and awareness towards this rising river. The author, a local insurance company, would then in turn increase their exposure whether people agree with them or not. This exposure is recognized by the search engines.

One of my clients, a taxi service in Chicago, is including their QR code in the back seat of their taxi. They encourage their customers to scan this code with their smart phone and share their experience in this Online. People are uploading pictures of themselves, leaving reviews and rating an army of links back to my client site. We are not getting the citations or links ourselves, but we are using the power of social media to generate this exposure.

In the past, we have created new Wikipedia pages and send the content sources to authorities in the industry that we know would appreciate it. They in turn share this new valuable information with their friends and followers and give credit to the author, the business in question. Yet another way to generate citations from users

as you can see I can simply just go on and on with a variety of different strategies for social media to acquire links and citations. You must really understand your audience and dig deep to uncover new ways for your audience to enjoy engaging in a conversation related around your business. Once you’ve discovered this, identifying and implementing a certain strategy for your client or your business is the easy part.

Local PR

It is not that difficult to devise a PR strategy with local newspapers and publications to run content that sites the business in question both in the off-line in the online world and this is a very high authority citation for any local business.

For example, finding and joining local networking groups is not that difficult to get business citation as a member of one of these websites and having the search engines index this information and assign authority and credibility to the business in question.

Joint Ventures

One often overlooked opportunity for local businesses in the online world is to identify joint ventures with other businesses that serve similar audience. For example chiropractor’s, massage therapists and dentists could all very easily share their patient database with one another. By identifying local theme related businesses that you can create partnerships with and joint ventures with, having other local businesses cite your business on their website and their pages is relatively easy to accomplish.

In the case of your Internet marketing agency, a credit card processing firm as an example of an excellent JV. We are both going after the same audience and there was nothing, both direct and indirect, that would be perceived as competition.

Identifying volunteer and donation opportunities through local and theme charities is an excellent opportunity to give a little bit to the community and in turn get referenced online.

Again, this comes down to your audience profiles. By understanding the audience in question, and where they are hanging out on the Internet, will give us great insight into understanding which sites we may want to work with and create a potential partnership with.

Completive Analysis

In marketing principles, competitive research is an extremely important stage in the marketing planning process. The more we can understand about the rights and wrongs of the direct and indirect competition, the better we can position ourselves to market our business or our clients.

Therefore, we are going to take a look at the citations acquired by the competition.

First, let’s take a look at what Google might see on our competition. Refer to your competitive research list, which is taught in the Marketing Principals section. You will need your competitive research completed and your strategy map for this exercise.

Do a search for your number one keyword and take a look at the results. Identify who you’re top organic and local competitors are and document them on your competitive analysis excel file, including their full NAP and any NAP variations. Then do a Google search for each of their NAPs and variations of their NAP, such as address, business name and DBAs. Scout the top three pages for relevant sources!

In your competitive research file that I hope you have for every one of your clients, list the URL of all your main competitors. Visit each one of those sites and make a determination of whether or not this is a citation that you can acquire. Once you accomplish this step set strategies in motion to contact these sites to acquire the citation. Some of these sites will be different portals, review sites, local and theme blogs and some will not fit into any of these categories. These are citations that you need not acquire.

Local Directories, Publications, Networking Groups

By joining the Chamber of Commerce or different local networking groups is not that difficult to get business citation as a member of one of these websites and having the search engines index this information and assign authority and credibility to the business in question.

I suggest taking that businesses chamber logo and attaching it to the businesses website with a single one-way link to identify from a user value perspective at that local business participates in local networking groups and supports the community.

I joined my chamber of commerce for $20 per month. This is a no-brainer to me for any business to get listed and get a highly trusted citation.

I started a NING social platform for my niche. What about Facebook groups centered on your community? What about parenting forums if your client is a local restaurant?

Think about the business and reference your audience profile sheet. When considering the audience character traits, perhaps dental patients in Vancouver, Canada, consider what’s important to them.

Ok, so this dentist we’re assuming has positioned themselves around preventative maintenance, rather than say cosmetics, such as teeth whitening. Their patients are those who make an effort to get their teeth cleaned, what to do the work to keep them white and healthy. Being in Vancouver, they’re all health nuts, try and find a greasy spoon and it’s hard. It’s all about salads and weed, odd place.

What do stoned health nuts do online? Well, first I’d start by following some of these people. Twitter search makes this easy to find followers.

Then I’d follow the links they are all talking about. I’d start to collect all these location sites and document them over time. After a few weeks of this system in place, I’ll have a great idea of where these people frequent. Everyone on the social sites likes to share information. This information is valuable when trying to understand where our target audience is hanging out.
